Young trombonist in Musician of the Year battle

A 12-year-old boy is today hoping to become the youngest person ever crowned BBC Young Musician of the Year.

Trombonist Peter Moore is one of five musicians competing for the prestigious title at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff.

They have all been performing with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales as part of the grand final weekend, before the winner is announced tonight.

Joining Peter in the final are: Sheffield-born Jadran Duncumb, 18, on the guitar; flautist David Smith, an 18-year old from Fife; 17-year-old Jim Molyneux, a percussionist from Littleborough; and Ipswich student Erdem Misirlioglu, an 18-year-old pianist.

Belfast-born Peter, who has lived in Manchester since he was eight, said he was "really happy" to be in the final.

Peter, a tennis and football fan, added: "I want to be a soloist so this is a fantastic platform to start from."

The competition, now in its 30th year, is being hosted by Blue Peter presenter Gethin Jones and singer Aled Jones.

Judges include former royal harpist Catrin Finch, 27, and violinist Nicola Benedetti, 21, who won the competition in 2004.
