Katherine Jenkins beats Spice Girls in album charts
KATHERINE JENKINS’S fifth album Rejoice has beaten the Spice Girls and Girls Aloud in this week’s UK charts.
The Neath-born mezzo-soprano is at number three, while the Spice Girls’ Greatest Hits is at number four and Tangled Up by Girls Aloud has just made it into the top five.
Jenkins heard the news as she opened her Viva La Diva tour with Darcey Bussell in Manchester last night .
Leona Lewis, holds on to her number one position, and Take That at number two.
While classically trained Jenkins has already topped the UK classical album chart, she said it was “fantastic news” to achieve her highest position in the UK pop album chart with Rejoice.
“It’s absolutely incredible news,” she said. “ What a fabulous way to start the Diva tour and what an amazing early Christmas present.
“I never imagined when I was a young girl listening to them on the radio that I would outsell the Spice Girls and Celine Dion. It’s almost too much to take in. I can’t thank my fans enough for all their support.”
X Factor winner Leona Lewis has retained the number one spot in the singles and album charts. The 22-year-old’s debut release, Bleeding Love, the biggest selling song of 2007, has now notched up a fifth week at the top of the singles chart.
