CARDIFF’S Adam Constable failed to make it a hat-trick of Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship crowns at Bull Bay, Anglesey.
Constable, winner of the title in 2006 and last year, was always up against it after a 78 on the opening day and a second-round 77 saw him 15 over-par and way down the field.
Bolton’s Steve Parry produced rounds of 65 and 75 to finish level par and secure a five-shot win over second-placed George Cowan, of Westerhope.
In addition to the £1,875 prize money, Parry also wins exemption to the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Challenge at the Vale in July.
Also heading south will be Vale of Llangollen’s Lee Rooke after finishing the highest-placed Welshman in the field.
A COLD putter prevented Oakdale pro Matthew Griffiths from really hitting the heights on Monday over the famed Somerset course at Burnham & Berrow.
The 28-year-old from Caerphilly still managed a one-under 70 in the West Region’s qualifying round for the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship, comfortably sending Griffiths through to the 72-hole championship final at Moortown, Leeds, in July.
The best score of the day came from 22-year-old Guiseppe Licata (Hambrook DR, Bristol), whose four-under 67 comprised an eagle, four birdies and two bogeys.
THE Wenvoe Castle Golf Club ladies section raised more than £2,000 for charity at their Winter Final.
The event was won by Molly Evans, with Wendy Motton and Fran Grant runners-up. Afterwards, immediate past ladies captain Mrs Grant presented a cheque for £2,130 to Meningitis Cymru.
