SWANSEA BAY hockey stars are back home after taking the European championships in Bulgaria by storm, writes Chris Smart.
They have actually moved up a championship grade after grabbing the silver medal in Gabrovo.
Swansea Bay wiped the floor with every team except one and missed out on the gold medal on goal difference – by a mere goal.
They overcame Turkish team Kilimli Bld Sc 6-0, Silema Hotsticks from Malta 9-1 and Lithuanian outfit Taurus 4-1. These victories were followed by a 7-2 triumph over HC Dias of Greece and a final 4-4 draw with Slovenian side Pliva Lipovci HC.
They played better hockey than for many years with John Atkins and Dominic Valrio showing up particularly well and gaining some invaluable experience.
Swansea’s Jonathan Gordon was player of the tournament.
Manager Les Malinovsky was naturally elated. “We have accomplished our goal and gained promotion from a group full of banana skins,” he said.
“I am very proud of the way the whole squad performed. Next year at the new level we will play against the French, Irish and Belgian champions.”
Club officials hope to apply to hold the tournament next year at the new Swansea Leisure Centre.
