Squash: Cardiff out of Super League

CARDIFF Squash Club have been left adrift at British Super League level.

The club, based in Ryder Street, Cardiff, were recruiting their team for 2008 when they were told the league would not be running this season.

Cardiff, Halifax and Exeter were all keen, but the withdrawal of Ipswich and Winchester mean the league was unable to start.

“It’s a real pity because we were already lining up our players,” said Cardiff SRC coach Nic Birt.

“Super League squash won’t be running this season, but the plan is to build for 2009 and relaunch it.”

Cardiff SRC had lined up French ace Gregory Gaultier, ranked at number five in the world, and Egyptian Wael El Hindi, who is in the top 20.

Welshman David Evans and Joey Barrington, the son of Jonah Barrington, had also signed up.

Despite the setback at Super League level, squash in Cardiff is healthy.

There are around 120 playing members at Cardiff Squash Club and more are joining.
