Rugby League: Danny the boy for in-form Wakefield

Danny Brough believes he is in the best form of his career after he inspired Wakefield to a 54-16 Millennium Magic hammering of Castleford yesterday.

The 25-year-old Scotland captain kicked 18 points for John Kear’s men and produced another stunning performance to add further weight to his current reputation as the engage Super League’s form player.

“I’m really happy with the way that I’m playing, it’s probably the best period of form of my career,” admitted the former Castleford scrum-half. “I’m enjoying it. The players listen to me and I listen to them and it’s good.

“We’ve got some exciting backs and if I keep giving them the ball then they’ll keep scoring tries.

“That (against Castleford) was the best team performance that we’ve had. It’s really enjoyable to do it on the big stage, at a big ground and on the television.

“A win overall is good but to get 50 points is too. We stuck to our task and kept our commitment. To score the points is a bonus.”

The second game of the 2008 Millennium Magic event marked a winning return to South Wales for Brough, whose kicking won the 2005 Challenge Cup for Hull on the same ground.

And with his Wakefield side riding high in both league and cup after five straight wins, Brough is hoping that he can lift some silverware again this season.

“We’ll target next week and then the week after but who knows where we can go?” he said. “We’ll stick to that but we’re taking it a game at a time. This is a really good side though.

“It’s a bit of a habit for me coming here – that’s back-to-back wins now but most importantly it’s five on the bounce for Wakefield.”

Kear, who was also Brough’s coach at Hull, was not slow in echoing the recent praise for his player’s form either, saluting his leadership throughout the club’s recent injury crisis.

“Danny is in an exceptional vein of form,” said Kear.

“The most pleasing thing about Danny isn’t his skill level or his commitment because I knew that already.

“The pleasing thing is that we lost Brad Drew and Jason Demetriou, and the likes of Danny, Sam Obst, Jamie Rooney and Tevita Leo-Latu have stood up to the mark as really good leaders.”
