R League: Dixon hails brave Crusaders

Celtic Crusaders 26-14 Barrow Raiders

CELTIC CRUSADERS coach John Dixon hailed his players after taking top spot in National League Two.

The Crusaders ran in five tries at Bridgend’s Brewery Field as they impressed before the live S4C TV cameras.

“That was a crucial win for us as the competition at the top is very close,” said Dixon.

“To see the guys dig in and play as well as they did for 80 minutes against a Barrow side who gave everything was very satisfying.

“We answered all the challenges and I can’t underestimate the value of this win.”

The Crusaders made their early chances count to build up a healthy first-half lead and ensure they would leapfrog Barrow in the table.

Darren Mapp rolled over the line to give them a ninth-minute lead before Neil Budworth and Tony Duggan claimed tries which Damien Quinn converted.

Tries from Barrow pair Liam Finch and Khamal Ganley reduced the deficit to 16-12 just after the interval.

But Crusaders extended their lead when Jace Van Dijk played a one-two with Mapp to score, and replacement Paul Ballard’s late touchdown sealed matters.

Raiders coach Paul Crarey felt refereeing calls went against his side as he defended his decision to travel down to Wales on the day of the match.

“Last year we came down and stayed overnight,” he said.

“But we were waiting around to play, it was hot and some of the lads had to go in the pool to cool off and it dragged on.

“So we made the decision to come down on the day and I don’t think it hurt us at all. We started slow but when we found our feet we matched them.”
