SEB SANDERS travelled to Southwell for just the one ride yesterday, but the joint champion jockey was made to work very hard to ensure it was a winning one on Look So.
Sent off as the 10-11 favourite following the morning defection of chief market rival Goodbye, the four-year-old made her rider earn every penny of his fee.
A winner at Windsor 22 days ago on good to soft ground, the Ralph Beckett-trained filly eventually wore down long-time leader Jord to claim the Michelle And Steve Ellis Happy 1st Anniversary Fillies’ Handicap.
“She made fairly hard work of it,” said a breathless Sanders after getting up by a neck.
“She handled the track well enough, but that is her racing style really (lazy).”
Sophie Doyle survived a mini-scare near the line when partnering Bentley Brook to victory in the Karndean Flooring Of Evesham Ltd Handicap.
Paul Blockley’s 5-2 favourite appeared to have got the better of Black Falcon after a protracted duel up the straight at the Midlands track, but only just held on to win by a neck.
“He just thought he’d done enough, so I tried to give him a little flick,” said Doyle.
“He’d been in front a while and thought that was it.”
