Bernie Ecclestone led the tributes from the Monaco Grand Prix paddock to Michelin chairman Edouard Michelin, who died yesterday.
Michelin, 42, drowned while fishing in Brittany, leaving a wife and six children and casting a shadow over preparations for tomorrow's Monaco Grand Prix.
Michelin was instrumental in bringing his family company back to Formula One in 2001, while a row with FIA president Max Mosley prompted him to order their withdrawal at the end of this season.
Ecclestone paid tribute to his impact on the sport, saying: 'It is very sad that he is dead obviously and it's sad the way it happened.
'He was a supporter of Formula One and Michelin have been for a long time. It's a big shame.'
Last year Michelin scored their first world championships since their return to Formula One, with Fernando Alonso and Renault taking the crowns.
Renault team principal Flavio Briatore said: 'Our memories of Edouard Michelin are of a fantastic competitor.
'He was always extremely supportive of the team, and delighted by last year's world championship victory.'
Michelin mechanics wore black armbands as a mark of respect, while the Automobile Club de Monaco flew flags at half mast.
