Ice Hockey: Dragons blaze a trail at Coventry

CARDIFF Dragons followed Cardiff Devils to the Skydome in Coventry.

The Devils fought out a thrilling 4-4 draw against Coventry Blaze in an Elite League clash before being edged out for the extra point after sudden death extra-time and penalties.

The Dragons travelled to face Blaze in an English National League match and emerged 4-1 winners.

Former Elite League ace Joel Poirier is Coventry’s ENL coach and they have a good record this season, but Cardiff were good value for their win.

Goaltender Ross Piggott faced 40 shots and conceded only one goal to earn man of the match, while the scorers were Ben Davies, David James, Steve Fisher and Michael Hutchins.

Cardiff’s next ENL match is against Milton Keynes at the Cardiff Bay rink on Saturday (6.15pm face-off).

At under-18 level, Cardiff Dragons won 4-0 against Slough to maintain their challenge for honours.

Scorers: Ryan Banwell 1+1, John Woolway 1+0, Chris Jones 1+0, Elliott Chapman 1+0, Ben Davies 0+2, Chris Hartnell 0+2, Steve Newton 0+2and Luke Evans 0+1.

The next match for Cardiff’s under-18 team is at Romford this Sunday. The teams then meet again at the Cardiff Bay rink a fortnight later.

Cardiff Dragons won 23-0 against Milton Keynes at under-14 level.

Michael Crisp had 16 shots on his goal and kept a shut-out, while Luke Evans was man of the match. Dragons are at home to Milton Keynes in an under-14 match this Saturday.
