THE FA Cup may end up in Cardiff this weekend but in 1956 the coveted trophy took pride of place in the Rhondda.

That was the year that valley-born footballer Roy Paul led Manchester City to their FA Cup triumph at Wembley.

Paul was the captain of the Manchester City side which beat Birmingham 3-1.

Leader reader Jeff Matthews has sent us this picture of Roy visiting wCymmer Secondary Modern School in 1956 to show the youngsters the prized trophy.

Jeff said: “The boys in the photo, who will be about 66 now, are George Samuel, Barrie Morgan, Owen Supple, Ray Edwards, Tommy Roberts, Talfryn James

Ken Parrish, Derrick Lewis, Gerald Thomas, Graham Lloyd, Winstone Greedy, Graham Moyle, Maldwyn Hicks and Bernard Jones

“The headteacher (at the back) is Len Hughes while the teacher at the front is John Thomas.”
