Pigeon Racing: Fanciers get a real buzz from racing
MEMBERS of a valley based Racing Pigeon Club are flying high after winning an award to fund a new electronic timing device.
The members who belong to the Penygraog Homing Society Racing Pigeon Club can now disband with the old way of registering their birds when they return home thanks to the new electronic timing device which automatically registers the returning pigeon.
The club was able to obtain the device thanks to funding from the All Wales award initiative.
The award was for £4,894 and each member contributed to pay for the timing device which cost £5,444.
The more traditional way of identifying homing pigeons are by way of a rubber ring on the bird’s leg and club secretary John Williams said: “The electronic timer certainly makes it a lot easier for us”.
The club are affiliated to the Rhondda Valley Federation and their president is Arwel Davies and the chairman is Ken Abbott. Their base is at the Penygraig Con Club.
The club has won several trophies including Rhondda Valley Federation Cups.
Mr Williams said: “We were given great support in obtaining the award by community police officer Gareth Owen and we cannot thank him enough for his help.”
