Football: Oh brother, it’s a fun game

TWO young footballers from Treforest Girls FC are making their mark on the national stage after being selected to play for south Wales.

Caitlin Woodland, aged 11, and Emily Pardoe, aged 12, are set to take on the west Wales Girls team in Treforest this weekend.

In just two years Caitlin has gone from being an absolute beginner to getting selected as goalkeeper for south Wales, and now the girls are encouraging others to get involved in the sport.

Caitlin, of Pontypridd, said: “My brother Lucas, who is two years older than me, inspired me to play.”

“I would encourage other girls to try football as it keeps you fit, it’s fun and I get to meet up with my friends every week.”

Coedpenmaen Primary School pupil Caitlin also enjoys playing netball and singing, and would like to continue playing football when she moves on to Hawthorn High School in September. Defender Emily, of Graigwen, added: “We have 15 members at Treforest Girls and are looking for more to join.

“You don’t have to have any experience, just come along and give it a try.”

The Pontypridd High School pupil has been playing football since she was eight and was also inspired by her brother.

The girls will play the west Wales representative team on Sunday May 11 at Treforest Football Club. Doors open at 10.30am.
