Rugby: Gilfach kick back

Gilfach Goch 36Treorchy 22

FOLLOWING their defeat of Bedlinog, Gilfach entertained Treorchy and claimed another good victory.

Gilfach struck early with a Gareth Walters penalty, but Treorchy tied the scores soon after.

Then, following some excellent passing, the ball was handed to Adam Mings who went over the line for Gilfach.

But then, following a long range kick into touch near the home line, the ball squirted out of the ruck and Treorchy were first to pick up and go over for a converted score.

Gilfach came back with some very slick play and put Adam Wray on a 25 yard run for the line. Walter converted.

But then Gilfach seemed to fall asleep and allowed Treorchy to go in for the softest of tries. This was converted to bring the half-time scores level at 17-17. In the second half Gilfach looked more purposeful and it was Mathew Llewellyn who burst away to go over. Walters once more did the honours and then Adam Powell latched on to a loose ball and sped away down the wing to score. This time Walters was off target.

Treorchy still had some fight left and proved it with their best try to bring the scores to 29-22.

But Michael Hughes, Gilfach’s top try scorer this season, would not be denied the final glory and got his touch down. Gareth Walters converted.

This win confirms Gilfach as runners up and secures them a Division Two play-off.

Gilfach entertain Old Illtydians in their final match of the season so come on give these boys the support they deserve.
