Football: Rees hits double as Neath take the spoils

TWO goals from Matthew Rees punished defensive errors by Aberystwyth in this rather drab end-of-season encounter in the Welsh Premiership.

Neath won’t really care two hoots about the quality as they gave themselves a fantastic opportunity of battling it out with rivals Port Talbot Town and Carmarthen Town for a top-four finish.

The Seasiders briefly rose above mediocrity just before the break, with Robert Evans hitting a post and Gavin Cadwallader forcing a save from Neath keeper Craig Morris.

But they were pegged back further when Rees robbed a hesitant Luke Sherbon before firing home a 56th minute second for the visitors.

Neath looked comfortable until Aber suddenly came to life again 15 minutes from time. Youngster Robert Evans ended a fine run down the left by allowing substitute Stuart Roberts to reduce the deficit.

At last some urgency crept into Aber’s display but Neath held onto the advantage and a dream season in Welsh football’s top flight.
