Junior rugby: Youth sparkle in season finale

Ynysowen 27
Tredegar 17

THE LATE withdrawal of Abertridwr left the seniors without a game so all eyes were on the youth who put in a good performance to defeat their Gwent counterparts in their final game of the season.

From the start the home team looked dangerous and good passing put winger Mathew Davies in at the corner. Minutes later Byron Flynn picked up a loose ball in midfield and used his pace on an arcing run to touch down wide out. Lewis Hughes kicked a difficult conversion.

Ynysowen kept up the pressure from the restart with a good catch and drive by prop Gerwyn Davies and a fine run down the middle by Hughes who linked with Richard Gibby who made good ground until great scramble defence by Tredegar saved the try.

The Gwent outfit were also dangerous with ball in hand with outside half Paul Huwish proving an elusive runner. They opened their account with a penalty after the home side were penalised at a ruck.

Ynysowen tried to move the ball at every opportunity but often the last pass just went astray.

A good tactical kick by scrum half Chris Davies put his winger in for a neat score.

Tredegar responded and some good interplay saw them score their first try.

Strong running by the home team allowed wing Jake Howard space and he sprinted in to increase his side’s lead.

The game was very open with both sides running freely and a great break from a ruck by Davies saw him link with Flynn who put wing Curnow in space. As the cover was about to force him into touch a sublime inside ball put the supporting Nathen Watkins in for an excellent score.

Tredegar completed the scoring in an enjoyable game when Dan Jones picked up a loose ball to race over.
