Golf: Burns and Jones are top dogs

AFTER three rounds of competition, Carl Jones and Mike Burns lead the Saturday Top Dog Winter League at Morlais Castle GC.

Both players find themselves tied on 13 points out of a possible 15.

The competition, which has already attracted more than 35 entrants in the past three weeks, sees Gary Baker alone in second place on 11 points with Peter Downes, Bill McArthur, Robert Davies and Wayne Pullman all sharing third on 10.

Terry Cates and John Forrest currently stand on nine while Neil Jones completes the top 10 standings only a point further back.

Round four tees off at 12.30pm this Saturday, registration no later than 12.15pm with all members welcome.

As for the Sunday Top Dog competition, an amazing 64 players turned out in absolutely atrocious conditions last Sunday as the 4BBB pairs format reached week six of competition.

A win for Andrew Picton and John Forrest over Roger Griffiths and Graham Hughes on the final green ensured they continue the competition as the only pair to take maximum available points.

This Sunday (November 25) the competition also includes the annual Turkey Trot, registration no later than 8.30am with tee-off at 8.45am.

With Christmas Day rapidly approaching and the start of 2008 less than six weeks away, Morlais Castle GC is now offering a wide range of membership packages.

Anyone, male or female, of any age, interested in joining what is rapidly becoming the flagship golf club in the Valleys, can do so by contacting either club secretary Steven Jones or club manager Barney Curnock on (01685) 722822 for more details on the offers available.

The club has now started its annual winter deal package. This year’s offer to non-members, societies and members of other golf clubs is 18 holes of golf, gammon, egg and chips and a pint, for £15 per person.

Anyone interested should call Mr Curnock, or club pro Huw Jarrett on (01685) 388700.

Last Saturday the club hosted its annual Captain’s Presentation Night, an evening where all the competition winners for this season received their cups and trophies from club captain Bob Wilding and Ladies captain Joan Strand.

A full report and complete list of winners will be published next week.
