Football: Mochen strikes six to keep heat on leaders

Cascade 0Penydarren & Merthyr Valley Ladies 7

THE VALLEY team won their fifth match in a row in the South Wales Women’s League to keep up the pressure on leaders Swansea City.

Within 10 minutes the girls were 3-0 up with Lynsey Mochen hitting the first two of her six for the afternoon, and Katie Davies curling in a free kick from the edge of the box.

The travelling supporters had to wait until five minutes before the break when Mochen completed her hat-trick and started her second.

The second half was much the same with Lynsey Holdaway playing her first game of the season, due to international boxing duty with Wales, putting in some tremendous tackling in midfield to allow her and Davies to control the game.

Mochen scored her fifth on 52 minutes, and with Thomas, Murphy and Churchill completely closing out Cascade, a brilliant through ball from Williams put Mochen through to slide home from close range.

In the League Cup first round, the Valley women disposed of Porthcawl 5-2.

Hollie Williams scored after five minutes and Lynsey Mochen soon afterwards. Mochen got her second with a stunning 30-yard lob but, as the game progressed, Porthcawl came back strongly to bring the score back to 3-2.

But star striker Mochen completed another hat-trick just after the break and Williams hit her second in the final minute to make it safe.

Their next home game is versus Blaenavon Blues on November 11. Any ladies interested in playing, ring Lisa on 07837215317.

l The Under-16 team lost in the first round of the Welsh Cup to Crickhowell despite taking a two-goal lead through Kirsty Hardwick and skipper Sian Scannell.

However, the girls paid the price for missing numerous chances to kill off the game and Crickhowell came back to win.

Their next game is away to Cyncoed. Any girls wishing to join can ring Sharon or Martin on 01443693472.

l The Under-12 team continued their great run of form going undefeated in their last four matches.

A 2-0 win at home to Treforest, with goals by Paignton Waters and Maria Martins, was followed up by another 2-0 win over Pantyscallog VJ with two from Maria Martins.

On Sunday, they drew 1-1 with Cwmbran and drew 0-0 with Aberdare to see them move up to seventh in the league.
