ROBERT POWELL is Morlais Castle Golf Club Matchplay Cup Champion after a fine 3&1 victory over Andrew Tarbuck.
The standard of golf from both players was a fitting end to the competition, which started some five months ago with an entry field of more than 70 players.
Five-handicap Powell, who recorded a level par round, sealed victory on the 17th green.
Sixteen-year-old Ashton Griffiths claimed the Bogey Cup, played on Saturday, with an excellent score of +3. Five-handicap Griffiths beat his nearest rival by two clear holes to successfully defended the title he won last year.
Jimmy O’Donovan finished runner-up on +1, with David Tovey coming in third.
In the Tankard Competition, 10-handicap Neil Morgan collected first place with a fine score of +2. Morgan won on back nine count-back as Kevin Lang, Nathan Perks and John Allan also completed their rounds on +2.
Stephen Albert and Martin Davies finished on +1, with Jonathan Gunter, Robert Cushen, Gary Cunningham and Terry Crimmings all coming in next.
Eighteen-year-old Rhydian Albert collected the Robert Evans Memorial Shield with an excellent score of 39 points. Six-handicap Albert claimed the title by a single point from Malcolm Evans, Mathew Rivers, Mark Evans and dad Stephen as all four players finished on 38 points.
Sunday also saw the opening round of the Winter League Top Dog Competition, with 112 players teeing up.
Any members wishing to enter the competition are still free to do so. Entrants must register at the club each Sunday morning, no later than 8.30am.
This weekend the official club competition on Saturday is the Medal Final and Tankard, the 12 final qualifiers being Craig Baldwin, Jack Bush, Peter Downes, Leon Felton, Mike Gwyther, Jamie Hughes, Ceirion Jones, Jamie Keddle, Darren Murphy, Liam Stone, Martin Sullivan and Andrew Tarbuck.
Please note tee-off time for the finalists is from noon.
The Ladies Competition on Saturday is the Mayors Appeal.
On Sunday morning the club will be hosting the second weekend of Winter League Top Dog, while in the afternoon, the stableford format PJ Draw continues at the normal time of 2pm.
All members please note that on Friday, October 19 at 7.30pm, the club will be hosting an EGM. Details are available on the club notice-boards.
