Taylor’s strike is not enough

Llanwern 2 Treharris Athletic 1

TREHARRIS lost again but could consider themselves unlucky not to have got a point in this Welsh League Division Two match at Spytty Park, Newport.

There were few chances in the first half with both defences on top of their game.

Evergreen Anthony Thomas came to Treharris’s rescue in the 12th minute, clearing off the goal line after keeper Steve Bouse saved with his feet from home winger Steve Stinton.

Minutes later, Treharris came close with Nathan Rich chipping over the crossbar after Abu Mugobero won the ball in midfield.

Five minutes into the second half, Llanwern took the lead with a solid header by Steve Perszewski six yards from goal from a Marcus Power right-wing cross.

On the hour, Treharris equalised through sub Ryan Taylor, on for Rich, shooting high into the angle of keeper Chris Hart’s net from 15 yards after Gary Bouse rolled the ball across the box.

Fifteen minutes from time, Llanwern were awarded a harsh-looking penalty by Bridgend referee Geoff Martin against Anthony Thomas.

Perszewski netted for his second goal of the game.

Two minutes from time, Treharris were unlucky not to equalise when the ball got stuck between striker Ian Batten’s legs a few yards from goal.

On the stroke of full time, Llanwern were awarded another penalty against Alun Jones but keeper Bouse saved well from Power’s well-struck penalty, driving low to his right to push the ball away for a corner.

Next Saturday, table toppers Ely Rangers visit the Athletic Ground, kick-off 2.30pm.
