Golf: Glam must up their game to stay afloat in Channel

GLAMORGAN will have to step up a gear if they are to challenge for the Channel League title this season after a disappointing start to their programme in going down 9½-5½ to Wiltshire at Cumberwell Park.

Honours were even in the foursomes but the Welsh county were well beaten in the singles, winning only two matches.

Radyr’s Brent O’Neill produced a good performance overcoming John Hiscock by 2&1, while the other Glamorgan winner was former county champion Richard Hooper.

Royal Porthcawl’s Jonathan Bale went through the day unbeaten – he first linked up with captain Richard Evans for a 2&1 foursomes success and then carved out a half with John Tomlinson.

“It was very disappointing, we just did not perform at all,” said Glamorgan president Roger Jones.

Results (Glamorgan names first) – foursomes: L Thomas and G Williams halved with A James and K Phillips; J Holmes and R Hooper beat J Tomlinson and J Hiscock 2&1; J Frazer and N James lost to M Swales and C James 5&4; C O’Neill and B O’Neill beat M White and J Smith 2&1; R Evans and J Bale lost to R Scarrott and B Stow 2&1. Foursomes result : Glamorgan 2½ Wiltshire 2½.

Singles: Thomas lost to James 7&6; Hooper beat Swales 2&1; Williams lost to Phillips 4&3; Frazer lost to C James 4&3; Holmes halved with Scarrott; James lost to Stow one hole; C O’Neill lost to to Smith 6&5; B O’Neill beat Hiscock 2&1; Bale halved with Tomlinson; Evans lost to White 5&4.
