Golf: Vale set for title defence

VALE OF GLAMORGAN open the defence of their Welsh women’s team championship at Nefyn in June against Newport Links.

On paper, that is a game they should win without too many difficulties, but a difficult second-round match against either St Pierre or Ashburnham will await them.

Pennard, one of the most successful clubs over the last two decades, face a difficult time.

They open on Tuesday, June 19 with an easy-looking match against Cottrell Park, but then will clash with last year’s runners-up Newport and then, if successful, probably meet Llandudno (Maesdu), beaten finallists in 2004 and champions two years later, for a place in the last 16.

One of the most interesting first-round battles could be that between Royal Porthcawl and Bargoed.
