Boxing: Date marks Driscoll's Lonsdale feat

IF last week marked 40 years since Howard Winstone became world champion, this week has also contained a significant anniversary for Welsh boxing.

On January 30, 1911, Jim Driscoll’s repeat victory over Geordie Spike Robson earned him a Lonsdale Belt outright, the first man to achieve the feat.

The National Sporting Club, who controlled the sport in Britain at the time, introduced the belts in 1909 – and the first three to be contested were all won by Welshmen.

As well as Cardiffian feather Driscoll, they were Pontypridd light Freddie Welsh and Rhondda middle Tom Thomas.
