Athletics: Race attracts class field

TALENTED Welsh road runners will be in Bute Park tomorrow for the British Military Fitness 5k tomorrow – and there are Welsh titles up for grabs.

The race incorporates the Welsh 5k Championships for the second year in a row, and also features an Under 23 International between Wales, Scotland, and England with Cardiff AAC’s Simon Lawson and Bristol AC’s Craig Peters leading the Welsh challenge.

The senior race sees a re-match between some of the top Welsh talent that featured in the recent Armagh International Road Race.

Current champion Matt Shone, who was first in Armagh, is competing in the Reading half marathon this weekend, in a bid to step up in distance, and in preparation for his London Marathon debut in April.

With many other Welsh Internationals expected to run, as well as a host of top runners from further afield, the event looks set to be one of the best 5k Road races in the UK this year.

The race is also open to the masses, and registration is available on the day. The event starts outside the changing rooms in Bute Park at 10am.
