Athletics: Champ Carys is the real Deeley

THE clash between two of last year’s winners, under-15 champion Carys Deeley (The Cathedral) and the leading senior Gwenno Brown (YG Glantaf), proved to be the highlight of the recent Capitol Shopping Centre Cardiff and Vale Schools cross-country championships for girls at Trelai Park, Cardiff.

In their final race of the day, Deeley and sixth former Brown ran side by side for the opening two small laps.

But the one significant hill proved decisive with Deeley getting to the top first and pulling away on the long downhill run to the finish for victory and the under-17 title.

Brown, from Glantaf while only second this year, claimed her first under-20 win and helped her school retain the team title.

In the two younger age group races, Megan Osborne (Llantwit) completed an unbeaten season with a win in the year seven race while year eight Caitlin Bryant got the better of her year nine rivals to add the under-15 crown to last year’s under-13 victory.
