Athletics: Lawson stars at championships

SIMON Lawson was the star of the show at the tenth South Wales Regional Schools cross-country championship for boys, held at Trelai Park, Cardiff.

It was back in 2002 that the then year 8 pupil first underlined his potential by winning the u13 event at the fifth version of these championships.

In the intervening years, he has won three more times.

This year, on an unusually mild and sunny afternoon, there was no holding the year 13 student as he moved away from the field from the start for a gun-to-tape victory, retaining his senior title from year 11 Jonathan Hopkins (Brynteg), the 2006 u15 champion.

There was a second individual title for Llanishen High in the u15 section as year 10 Joel Redman also adopted front-running tactics to finish twelve seconds clear of Vale rival Owen Haswell (Stanwell). In the u13 race, the victory of Matthew Antoniazzi was the first medal success for the Lewis School in Pengam
