THE future of Welsh pole vaulting seems to be in good hands if the results from last weekend’s National under-15 and under-17 championships are anything to go by.
Although athletes from South Wales were fairly scarce, three young pole vaulters enjoyed a fair slice of success in Sheffield.
Top of the tree – almost literally – was Cardiff AAC’s Lewis Newton who soared to the gold medal in the under-15 pole vault, clearing 3.60m to clinch the title by 10cms from his nearest rival.
And Bridgend AC’s Rhianydd Llewellyn, 13, followed that with a silver medal in the girls’ event, jumping 3m – higher than she has done before for an achievement that ranks her top of the first year under-15s and British No 2 in her age-group.
