Stylish Beddau sweep to title

BEDDAU, just needing one point from yesterday's match to clinch the Championship, showed few nerves at lowly Abercynon as they swept aside the hosts 58-17 to claim the crown.

Daniel Palk grabbed a brace of tries and there was one apiece for Chris Bundy, Ashley Copic, Robert Jones, Chris Jones and brothers Tom and Glen Slater.

Chris Robinson was top scorer of the day with a touch-down and five conversions and a penalty for a personal tally of 18 points.

Bargoed could finish runners-up but yesterday they only snatched victory against relegation strugglers Blackwood in the last ten minutes to make a 45-27 scoreline look slightly flattering.

Gareth McCarthy grabbed a hat-trick of tries and Nicky Coughlin, Bryn Francis and Lewis Weyman also crossed while Jamie Howells added the extra 15 points with the boot.

Ystrad Rhondda picked up their first away point last week and yesterday they added a timely first away win as they secured a 6-13 victory at Newport Saracens and in the process lifting themselves off the bottom spot andinto the safety zone.

Gareth Pugh scored two tries and there was one apiece for Brad Watts and Nathan Rees. Dylan Jones was successful with three conversions.

Wesley Cunliffe was the Saracens sole try scorer with Darren Gregg adding the extras.

The relegation battle is very much in the Rhondda club's hands as their remaining fixtures are against fellow strugglers Abercynon and Blackwood.

There were only two matches in division one west and both the games went against the form book as relegation fighters Builth Wells and Waunarlwydd both won away from home.

Waunarlwydd won their first away match of the season in style as they crushed Cwmllynfell 53-23 while Builth Wells shocked third placed Narbeth by running in three tries in the first few minutes.

The Otters never fully recovered and Builth Wells eventually ran out 47-24 victors.

Fred Lewis was top try scorer with a brace and there was one apiece for Sion Hughes, Gareth Kinsey, Villi Kinohi, Wayne Morris and John Thursdaen.

Rob Lloyd was successful with six conversions.
