Division One round-up

DESPITE being unable to cross the Blackwood line UWIC stand proudly at the top of Division One East with an unblemished record and they are now the only side from both east and west divisions undefeated.

It was a dour and scrappy affair at Cyncoed Road with defences cancelling each other out. In form Scott Sneddon put over four penalties for the Students whilst his opposite number for Blackwood Jeremy Lloyd landed two penalties as the Students grabbed the vital three league points in a low scoring 12-6 encounter.

Beddau recorded an important 14-10 victory over Newbridge to move into second place with their fourth win out of five.

With the sides were tied at 3-3 at half time, it took a try by Beddau winger Dan Meredith and two more penalties from Steve Robinson  to give the home side the verdict.

Llanharan picked up their first points in amazing fashion as they truly put Abercynon to the sword as they ran in twelve tries in an 81-3 rout.

Full-back Arwel Davies grabbed a hat-trick and Ross Pearce totted up l7 points through his kicking.

Ystrad Rhondda also broke their duck as they just pipped Bargoed 24-21 in a fast and exciting game.

Nathan Hughes, Adrian Owen and Howell Stoddard ran in the winning tries while Wayne Jervis and Daniel Phillips shared the kicking points.

Nicky Coughlin, Anthony Lott and Ross Jones all touched down for Bargoed with Robbie Young adding six points.

Promoted Newport Saracens just pipped relegated Pontypool 12-9 and Fleur de Lys provided a shock as they ran out 21-10 victors at Caerphilly.

Bridgend Athletic now lead Division One West beating Loughor 21-16.

Tom Goodwin ran in a fine solo try for Athletic and Steve Lewis also crossed and kicked a vital dropped goal in injury time. Stuart Morris added the extras with two penalties and a conversion.

Fancied Merthyr put on a fine display as the brushed aside Dunvant 43-13.

Greg Plank grabbed a brace of tries and Dan Davies, Mark Addis and captain Jason Price all crossed - a penalty try was awarded and Richard Langmead was in fine form with the boot as he landed five conversions and a dropped goal.

Builth Wells remain the only team without a point as they were crushed 43-16 at home to Cwmllynfell.

Mark Jones kicked 16 points for Carmarthen Quins in their 29-10 victory over Narberth.
