Merthyr, Bridgend remain unbeaten

WITH the season less than two weeks old, only Merthyr and Bridgend Athletic can boast 100 per cent records in division one west.

The Athletic notched up 30 points last week against Dunvant but went one better yesterday, running out 31-12 winners at Narbeth.

And the newly promoted club could be a force to be reckoned with this term.

Dylan Mafi was top try scorer with a brace and there were fine performances from Steve Lewis, Rhodri Davies and Wayne Foukes, with Stuart Morris kicking three conversions.

Merthyr have also started this season in fine style and were very impressive in their 15-7 victory over last year's runners-up Whitland.

Mike Wilson ran in a fine try, converted by Richard Langmead, who later put over a dropped goal.

But the day's honours belong to young Daniel Davies, who scored the winning try on his first-team debut with just minutes remaining.

Carmarthen were too strong for champions Bonymaen, who must be wondering how their fortunes changed so rapidly, as they romped home 26-5.

Promoted Dunvant cruised past Builth Wells 39-13 and Llangenech won 35-15 at Waunarlwydd. Cwmllynfell and Lougher were involved in an exciting

24-24 tie.

UWIC notched up their second victory, crushing promoted Abercynon 52-16.

Promoted Bargoed made it two wins out of two as they thrashed Newport Saracens 43-27 and Newbridge won at Blackwood 10-6.
