Six-try Parish on promotion trail

MAESTEG need only one point from their final four games to secure a well-earned promotion from the First Division of the Welsh National League - and they displayed championship rugby as they went on the rampage at Fleur de Lys yesterday, running out 50-19 victors.

The Old Parish crossed their hosts' line six times with fine individual tries by Richard Morgan, James Dixon, Alan Brown, Matthew Jeffrey, Ross McGraw and Kevin Ellis. Ever-reliable Mark David had another red letter day with the boot, putting over four conversions and four penalties for a fine personal tally of 20 points.

Glamorgan Wanderers have enjoyed an amazing run and yesterday won their tenth game on the bounce, overcoming visitors Carmarthen Athletic 17-6.

David Willey and Jonathan Luff scored the crucial touchdowns and Mark Heywood converted both and also kicked a penalty.

Ex Wanderer Dai Jones fired over two penalties for the Athletic. The Wanderers have five matches left and need 10 more points to confirm promotion.

The only fly in the ointment to the two leaders is Whitland's reluctance to concede. They're the only team left that can mathematically pip them to promotion and yesterday they put on a sparkling display as they routed Uwic 47-13.

The Borderers were a bit on edge in the first half and were just narrowly leading 12-8 at half time.

But after the interval they threw caution to the winds and notched up a further 35 points.

Rawhitti Williams scored a brace of tries.

Aled Davies also crossed and had a superb day with the boot, kicking six conversions and a penalty.

Records went tumbling at Parc Mawr, where Bonymaen scored a staggering 136 points against hapless Brynmawr's 14. Top try scorer was right-wing Lyndon Johnson with seven and he also landed a conversion. Neil Wilcox grabbed a hat-trick and there were braces for Graham Alexander and Colin Jones.

Anthony Evans also crossed and kicked 22 points while replacement Paul Warlow made an impact as he ran in a try and landed six conversions.

Tonmawr put up a brave fight at Builth Wells and were in fact leading with a minute to go but a last-gasp penalty gave Wells a 24-22 success.
