Aiming for fifty

BARGOED still need one more victory to secure the Division Three title, but their 36-18 victory over Cwmbran was their 50th successive unbeaten league match since losing to Crumlin in February, 2003.

A run of 49 wins and a 6-6 draw at Abergavenny was sealed with tries by wing Wayne Bowen, full-back Jeremy Lovell, centre Darren Humphries and prop Gareth McCarthy with two conversions and four penalties by Jamie Howells.

Mark Ellis and Carl Moore scored the Cwmbran tries.

Pill kept second by thrashing Llanishen, and Abergavenny pulled off a good 31-11 win over Rhymney with tries by Andy Delaney (3), James Williams and former Wales cap Kenny Waters, three of them converted by James Didcot. Darren Lloyd scored a try for the Brewers and Gareth Richards placed two penalty goals.

Abercarn had a good 35-17 win over Talywain, with Kris Moses landing 15 points from six shots, and tries coming from Kevin Price, Steven Cooper, Julian Long and Martin Davies.

Abercynon registered a superb 52-12 win over Newport Saracens in Division Two as Dan Hitchins (2), Neil Woodward, Geraint Turner, Gareth Davies, Ian Iles and Lyndon Lewis went over, and Matthew Turner landed 17 points. For the Sarries, Lewis Culverwell and Tyrone Mahoney scored tries and Darren Gregg added a conversion.

Llantwit Fardre owed their 21-19 win at Tredegar to a last-second penalty by Ryan Morgan, after he had landed two earlier efforts and a conversion with tries by fly-half Mike Thomas and No 8 Richard Andrews. Tredegar wing Dan Morris scored two tries to take his tally to 15, and a penalty try with two converted by Darryl Carter.

Merthyr are making a late promotion bid and gained a 29-14 win over battling Treorchy as captain and No 8 Jason Price scored a try hat-trick and others came from Rob Downes and Gethin Thomas. Grant Davies converted two while Rory Woods and Jamie Summers went over for the Zebras and Lee Stone converted both.

Leaders Ystrad Rhondda turned back Croesyceiliog 26-8 as Kery Taylor, Mark Davies, Paul Dunning and Dylan Jones gained the five-pointers and Jones converted three.

Pontllanfraith head Division Four and require a maximum of four points to take the title after they defeated Monmouth 31-14 with tries coming from Vince Welsh, Lee Butcher, Luke Hurley, Gary Stokes and Nigel Winnal, and two penalties by former Wales Youth cap Julian Vernall.

Trinant fell to Newport HSOB 11-18 despite a Lee Pidgeon try and two Jamie Lyons penalties as the Old Boys gained two tries by Matthew Brown and a try and penalty by Mike Ryan.
