Triumphant Sarries go clear

NEWPORT Saracens moved three points clear at the top of Division Two East after a comfortable 27-7 win at lowly Treorchy, writes Marc Heywood.

Saracens leapfrog Ystrad Rhondda, who did not play due to the weekend's extensive cup fixtures.

Elsewhere, Hirwaun beat Risca 30-6, while Croesyceiliog put in a commanding performance to defeat Llantrisant 33-7.

Croesy are now joint third with Llantwit Fardre, Treherbert, Rumney and Abercynon in what is becomingly an increasingly competitive league.

In Division Three South East, Gilfach Goch are now joint fourth after hammering Penygraig 59-0.

The away side arrived with only 15 players after a series of injuries disrupted their preparations.

As a result, Penygraig elected to play passive scrums for the entire match.

Despite their obvious disadvantage, they put in a spirited and committed performance and deserve a great deal of credit for their efforts.

However, Gilfach Goch were by far the stronger of the two teams, scoring nine tries in what was an entertaining, albeit one-sided affair.

Gilfach only led 18-0 at the break, but their fresh legs told in the second half as they ran out impressive winners.

Adrian Williams, Craig Williams and Ricky Priday all scored a brace of tries, while props Alan Davies and Mike Hughes also crossed for Gilfach.

Ricky Williams added another score, with Gareth Walters and Craig Williams converted seven tries between them.

Gilfach's players will now enjoy a week's break from squad training before hitting the new year hard as they prepare to take on Brecon on January 8.

In the division's only other fixture, Ruthin stay third following a 36-7 victory over mid-table Brecon.

In Division Three East Abercarn recorded only their second win of the season as they beat Pontypool United 18-5, while Rhymney won 18-0 at bottom side Dinas Powys.
