Treherbert topple leaders

TREHERBERT threw the Division Two East title race wide open as they sensationally toppled leaders Penallta 16-5 at Tynewydd Park.

Centre Liam Phillips scored the only try of a gritty encounter when he barrelled over midway through the first half, while outside-half Gareth Roberts kicked three penalties to secure a remarkable win.

Ystrad Rhondda made no mistake in taking advantage of Penallta’s slip as they ran four tries past Pill Harriers in a 26-5 triumph. Man-of-the-match centre James Davies led the way with a try, while Dean Jones and Thomas Hetherington also struck in a win which puts their side second.

Abercynon are still in the hunt too, but only after surviving a scare at Newport HSOB. The teams shared eight tries in the game which Abercynon sneaked 33-30 and outside-half Matthew Turner scored 16 points.

In Division Three East. Garndiffaith and Brynmawr closed the gap on Abergavenny at the top with bonus-point victories.

Chris Jones and Dorian Green both grabbed a brace of tries in Garndiffaith’s 32-0 stroll past New Tredegar, while Gavin Knapp and Sitoh Nobitano followed suit for Brynmawr in their 34-0 win over Pontllanfraith.
