PENALLTA consolidated their position as title favourites in Division Two East as they walked away with a 17-10 win from Abercynon in the top-two clash.
Both sides fought gamely in trying conditions, but it was Penallta outside-half Greg Callow who stole the show with 12 of his side’s points from a try, two conversions and a penalty.
Flanker Ryan James’ try kept the home side in the match, but a try from hooker Dale Powell, along with Callow’s salvo, ensured the leaders took the points.
Mountain Ash had their recent run of good form brought to a halt by their hosts Treherbert, who landed a nail-biting contest 11-10. Home winger Chris Morgan had his first-half try cancelled out by a penalty try, but Treherbert fly-half Gareth Roberts kicked a last-minute penalty and steal the result.
Ystrad Rhonnda still have the title in their sights after their 30-11 demolition of Rhydyfelin, while Builth Wells full-back John Thurston amassed a personal haul of 28 points including a try hat-trick in his side’s 43-7 hammering of Newport HSOB.
In Division Three East leaders Abergavenny and rivals Garndiffaith and Brynmawr recorded wins over New Tredegar, Pontypool United and Croesyceiliog respectively.
