Tonmawr in great form

TONMAWR’S ominous march to towards the Division One West title continued as they smashed hosts Merthyr for six of the best in a 41-10 hammering.

Head coach Jason Hyatt would have been purring as chief destroyer, full-back Gareth Morris, scorched in for a brace of tries and he was backed up in the victory by scores from Rob Hill, Adrian Phillips, Nicky Bonahan and James Donovan.

Tonmawr welcome basement boys Corus to the Whitworth Ground next weekend in a match that seems destined to keep the scorers busy.

Second-placed Carmarthen Quins are still in the hunt for honours, though, and they stayed in touching distance of the summit with their own six-try triumph, winning 34-13 at Cwmllynfell, with winger Anthony Rees getting a brace.

Dunvant built on their shock win over Bonymaen last time out by beating Corus 30-9, while Bonymaen themselves returned to winning ways with a 25-16 victory over Whitand.

Narberth overcame Bridgend Athletic 24-20, while Llangennech produced a stunning second-half fightback, overturning a 14-0 half-time deficit, to run out 31-14 winners at Waunarlwydd.

Chris Rees crossed for two of his side’s four tries, while Adrian Thomas contributed a try, a penalty and four conversions for a match haul of 16 points.

In the East, winger Nathan Preece was a two-try hero as leaders Pontypool outclassed Gwent rivals Newbridge 25-10 at the Welfare Ground.

Full-back Darren Pearce scored Pooler’s other try and outside-half Stuart Lawrence kicked 10 points, while back rower Rhys Bowen crossed for Newbridge as they had to give best.

Caerphilly continued their good form with outside-half Dean Watkins scoring 19 points as his side triumphed 31-15 over Newport Saracens after being level at the break.

Ross Madden and Scott Marasco had scored tries for Sarries, but the Cheesemen’s class told in the end with tries from John Griffiths and Gareth Miles adding to Watkins’ salvo to secure the success.

Elsewhere, Matthew Trowbridge scored a hat-trick for UWIC as the students trounced Beddau 50-13, winger Owain Williams picked up a brace as Blackwood secured a bonus point in their 34-16 win at Rumney and Bargoed and Llantrisant recorded wins over Llanharan and Fleur De Lys respectively.
