MAURO BERGAMASCO has been cited for allegedly gouging Lee Byrne’s eyes at the end of Wales’ 47-8 Six Nations win over Italy on Saturday.
Lock Carlo Del Fava was also cited for allegedly kneeing Wales fly-half Stephen Jones in the head early in the game. The incident was replayed on giant screens inside the Millennium Stadium and brought howls of protest from the home crowd.
Scottish match commissioner Peter Brown’s report to the Six Nations disciplinary committee alleges Bergamasco’s fingers made contact with Byrne’s eyes and face. If found guilty, the Italy flanker could face a lengthy ban.
Bergamasco and Del Fava face an independent Six Nations hearing in London tomorrow, chaired by Christopher Quinlan, QC.
