Llanelli doomed

Llanelli 10-17 Newport

LLANELLI were condemned to their sixth straight Welsh Premiership defeat with both Newport’s wings, Richard Fussell and Mike Poole, going in for the key tries at Stradey Park.

It has been a grim time for Llanelli, who have now lost their last three matches at home, and they never really recovered from falling 14-3 behind by half-time.

With the wind Newport enjoyed complete territorial advantage in the first period which saw Fussell crash over in the right corner.

Though Dan Evans got the home side on the scoreboard with a penalty, Poole rode two tackles to go over in first-half injury time.

Llanelli coach John Davies’s half-time team talk seemed to have spurred the home side on as wing Ifan Jones picked up and went over.

The pressure on Newport was relieved by a penalty for Poole, but that came from a dubious high tackle.

Llanelli: Try – I Evans; pen – D Evans; con – D Evans.

Newport: Tries – R Fussell, M Poole; cons – M Hook (2); pen – M Hook.
