BUILTH Wells Seconds booked their place in the final of the Mid Wales League Cup with a 22-8 victory at title rivals Trefyclawdd (Knighton) to keep alive their “double” hopes.
The Spa men, who themselves have enough games in hand to challenge for the league crown, maintained their pursuit of silverware with a storming second-half display.
With no points in the first period, they ran in three second-half tries through No 8 Andrew Davies, scrum-half Justin Lewis and wing Adam Rees, while Mike Davies also landed two conversions and a penalty.
Trefy, who had played against a strong wind in the first half, fancied their chances at the interval and took the lead through a penalty from fly-half Jubal Brighton.
But they found themselves outgunned before gaining a consolation try from second row Rob Duggan.
In the final, to be staged on Saturday, April 26, with Aberystwyth the likely venue, Builth will meet COBRA Seconds, who themselves made up ground on the league leaders with a 37-17 success over Newtown Seconds.
The Llanfair Caereinion men ran in six tries, with prop Phil Davies crossing once in each half, while wing Nigel Ellis, second row Gareth Jones, centre Sion Wyn Williams and No 8 Mark Evans also went over. Fullback Nigel Williams kicked a penalty and conversion, while Rhodri Davies also landed a conversion.
Newtown, who trailed 20-3 at the break, battled hard with prop Gareth Roberts going over for two tries, both converted by Marius de Villiers, who also kicked a penalty.
Llandrindod Wells gave visitors Cambrian Welfare a run for their money before losing 17-14 in the Welsh National League division six (central).
They had led 9-0 at the break, with Danny Davies kicking three penalties.
