Wales blow as James goes under the knife

BLUES wing Tom James has had an operation to remove his appendix and is out of Wales’ Six Nations squad, writes Andy Howell.

The promising speedster, who is highly rated by Warren Gatland, has seen his hopes of figuring in Wales’ assault on the Grand Slam destroyed by health problems.

James was hospitalised earlier this year after contracting an infection and has hardly played for his region since.

The 20-year-old former athletics runner was diagnosed with appendicitis two days ago and had keyhole surgery.

“Tom underwent an appendecectomy on Thursday afternoon,” said Wales team physiotherapist Mark Davies.

“The operation has proved successful and the he should be up and running within the next fortnight.

“This is something that could strike anybody at anytime, but the problem has been dealt with quickly and he is expected to make a speedy recovery.”
