A trip full of eastern promise?

Things to do in Hong Kong

Visitors could try a day-trip along the Kowloon–Canton Railway line from Shatin to Sheung Shui to experience life beyond the Kowloon hills.

Along the route are hillside temples and two sprawling New Towns (Sha Tin and Tai Po) that are the ‘real Hong Kong’ for millions of local residents.

Also popular with visitors is the laid-back Sai Kung peninsula, reached by mini-bus from Choi Hung Mass Transit Railway station or a ferry trip from the outlying ferry piers where hill trails, low-rise villages and seafood restaurants await.

And there are many culinary delights awaiting the hungry visitor.

As well as traditional Cantonese fare in Hong Kong, other popular Chinese cuisines include those of Sichuan, Chiu Chow, Beijing and Shanghai.

Asian food of all kinds is everywhere, with dozens of Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai restaurants.

Among the top restaurants are Yung Kee (32-40 Wellington Street, Central), famous for classic Cantonese dishes like roast goose and barbecued pork, and Felix, at the Peninsula Hotel, Salisbury Road, one of the swankiest bars in the world at one of the swankiest hotels.
