High Court asked to rule on Scarlets’ stadium row

THE High Court has been asked to rule on whether the level of financial support given by Carmarthenshire County Council to the Llanelli Scarlets’ new stadium is lawful.

Llanelli resident Richard Roper, a member of the Stradey and District Residents Action Group, yesterday applied to the High Court in Cardiff for a judicial review of a council decision last November.

At that time, councillors voted to back a proposal that Mr Roper claims will cost local taxpayers £32m. He said, “I am arguing that no reasonable council would have agreed to provide the level of funding the county council has committed to the new stadium.”

A spokeswoman for Carmarthenshire County Council said, “As yet, no legal documents relating to this matter have been served on the council.”

Work on the new stadium began late last year.
