DANNY Skyrme was Gwernyfed’s hero as the outside-half coolly slotted over the last match kick to secure a priceless 16-15 triumph at second-placed Abertillery in Division Four East.
An Aled Penn try had put the home side in control early on before prop Dylan Thomas crashed over for the visitors as they fought their way back to 13-10 half-time lead. Darren Miles regained the lead for Abertillery with two second-half penalties that seemed to have given his side the points, but Skyrme held his nerve to snatch the spoils.
Elsewhere in Division Four, Brynithel’s Greg Phillips kicked a penalty five minutes from time to pip Monmouth 11-10 and Nantyglo closed the gap on Abertillery as they edged out Risca 17-16.
Penallta stretched their Division Two East lead to eight points as they hammered struggling Pill Harriers 44-15. The leaders scored seven tries in the rout, with full-back Karl Rees’ effort the pick of the bunch.
Dale Keeping’s brace helped move Mountain Ash into second as they recorded a 26-5 bonus point win at Llanishen. Captain Scott Davies and scrum-half Merion Thomas completed the scoring.
In other Division Two games, Rhydyfelin and Treherbert also notched up wins against Newport HSOB and Abercynon.
Abergavenny continue to ride high in Division Three East as they raced over for six tries in a 41-10 defeat of Rhymney. Tom McPherson and Stuart Davies led the way with a brace apiece, while Paul Cornock and Owen Stephens also claimed tries.
Garndiffaith and Brynmawr remain in close pursuit of the leaders after each recorded victories.
Garn were thankful for 15 points from Darren Pearce, overcoming a spirited challenge from Croesyceiliog to triumph 25-17.
Richard Addis, Sipoh Nobitano and Gavin Knapp all went over in Brynmawr’s 34-10 defeat of Nelson, a penalty try securing their bonus. Nicky Strange chipped in with 14 points from the boot.
Senghenydd pipped Pontypool United for their first win of the season.
