Fury handed surprise Wales squad call

WARREN GATLAND this morning handed rookie Warren Fury a shock call-up for a Wales training camp ahead of their Battle of the Hemispheres with South Africa.

The 21-year-old London Irish scrum-half (pictured right) was summoned after injuries ruled out his first-choice number nines – Six Nations Grand Slam hero Mike Phillips and British Lion Dwayne Peel.

Former Blues star Phillips, now with Ospreys, is sidelined until next season after undergoing major knee surgery.

And Peel misses next week’s training camp in Ireland because of a recurring and worrying shoulder problem.

Gatland knows all about Fury, having signed the Swansea-born player while he was coach of London Wasps, and believes he is a player of potential.
