Law calls for Dragons boost

Newport 9-12 Bedwas

BEDWAS coach Steve Law believes the Dragons need a strong Welsh Premiership structure outside Newport, writes Tony Poole.

He made that point after four second-half penalties from ex-Treorchy and Swansea full-back Stuart Thomas made it a memorable day for Bedwas.

Bedwas had never won at Rodney Parade, and it also set up a first league double over Newport.

“I felt aggrieved that some 50-50 decisions went against us, but ultimately the boys dug deep to place Newport under pressure,” said Law.

“We deserved the win, and it just goes to prove that there is talent to be tapped in the region outside Newport.’’

Newport turned down the chance of a draw during injury time in neglecting two nailed-on penalties.

“We were looking to finish our home campaign with a victory, but the move didn’t come off,” said Newport coach Ian Hembrow.

Bedwas possessed a scheming fly-half in John Welch, and his slick hands set up three good openings during the first half.

But poor finishing let them down, and two penalties from Newport fly-half Daniel Griffiths sent them in with a 6-0 lead.

But as time dragged on it seemed as if goal kicks would win the day, and with Bedwas full-back Thomas landing all four penalties, they went on to make a little bit of history.
