SARACENS suffered a Heineken Cup heartbreak as they lost 22-21 in Biarritz in the last second of the match.
Alan Gaffney’s men took a deserved 14-9 half-time lead.
They still held a nerve-wrenching 21-19 lead two minutes into injury time but with one of the club’s most famous victories within reach, Biarritz scrum-half Dimitri Yachvili shrugged off a mixed day with the boot to kick the match-winning penalty.
Perpignan kept the pressure on London Irish at the top of Pool One after coming back to win 29-17 in Treviso.
The hosts took a lead into half-time thanks to a try by Benjamin De Jager and the boot of Marius Goosen, but the French team responded through touchdowns by Viliami Vaki, Damien Chouly, Adrien Plante and Mickael Ladhuie to overpower the group minnows.
