CARDIFF Blues second-row Deiniol Jones was today celebrating after being called up to the Wales Six Nations squad.
Jones won the last of his three caps under Mike Ruddock almost three and a half years ago against South Africa in the summer of 2004.
But the 30-year-old has been drafted in as a replacement for injured Ospreys lock Alun Wyn Jones who was ruled out of Scotland’s clash with an ankle injury sustained in the 26-19 victory over England.
The former Bridgend and Celtic Warriors lock has been in impressive form for the Blues over the last two years with the unsung Jones featuring in 30 of the Blues 32 games last season and in 16 of the Blues 19 so far matches this season.
“Deiniol has been in good form for the Blues this season and deserves his chance,” said Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde.
“If he can recreate what he has been doing at regional level in the international environment then we will be more than happy with him.”
The 6ft 6in lock has formed a formidable second-row partnership with New Zealander Paul Tito during this campaign for the Blues which has helped Dai Young’s men to qualify for the Heineken Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history this season, with Jones also topping the charts for lineout takes in the European group stages.
And Tito has backed his team-mate’s elevation to the international scene.
“I have to admit I was surprised when Deiniol was left out of the original squad,” said the Kiwi.
“I don’t think people realise exactly what Deiniol brings to the side.”
Jones joins fellow regional teammates Martyn Williams, Tom Shanklin, Gethin Jenkins, Tom James and Jamie Roberts in the Welsh Six Nations squad with Warren Gatland’s men eager to notch another victory against Scotland on Saturday at the Millennium Stadium.
