GARETH Thomas today looked forward to a Heineken Cup quarter-final clash with his old club Toulouse, declaring: “We won’t fear them.”
The former Wales captain scored his side’s second try in an outstanding 17-0 win at Bristol which secured a last eight berth for the Arms Park side for the first time since 2001.
The win was achieved on the back of a sterling forward effort in appalling conditions.
And while the Blues missed out on a home tie with the French giants that a more convincing victory would have earned them, nothing could dampen their celebrations.
“It doesn’t get much tougher than going to Toulouse – I should know!” said Thomas.
“But we can’t fear them and I believe if we perform the way we know we can then we’re capable of getting the result.
“The spirit in this side is so strong at the moment, it’s been one big effort with the players, coaches and supporters sticking together.
“We all know that Toulouse on their own ground are an awesome prospect. But we haven’t got this far to throw in the towel now.”
Blues head coach Dai Young echoed Thomas’ views.
“We’re not in the quarter-finals to make the numbers up,” he declared. “We wanted the home tie, but we have to be pleased with the win here and the manner of it.”
Meanwhile, Bristol coach Richard Hill dismissed the Blues’ chances of causing an upset in Toulouse.
Asked if he thought it was possible, he replied: “Honestly? No.”
