‘Blues being top is all that matters’ – says Young

CARDIFF Blues head coach Dai Young today put results before performances and emphatically declared: “All that matters is we are top of the league.”

The Arms Park side were disjointed for long spells and made hard work of a 30-16 win against Connacht last night.

But they came through in the end with not just the victory, but a bonus point thanks to two late Tom James tries to keep themselves well clear at the summit of the Magners League.

“The bigger picture is that we are top of the league and that is what counts,” said Young.

“Full credit to the boys who have really put the hard work in over the first six games.

“We will not win the league playing like that and there is an awful lot of rugby still to be played.

“But we have to be satisfied with our position at present.”

Gareth Thomas entered the fray from the replacements’ bench in the 52nd minute, coming on for wing Rhys Williams, though he did not have much chance to make an impact.

“We’ve been waiting all week for his paperwork, but it was nice to get him on to the field,” Young added.

“The big thing he gives us is his versatility and experience which will be invaluable.

“The internationals returning added to the mix, but we know we have improvements to make.”
