DALEKS are not robots. They are the mutated remains of the Kaled people of the planet Skaro. Kaled is, of course, an anagram of Dalek.
Daleks do not find stairs a problem. They have limited powers of antigravity with which they can move from one floor to another.
Daleks were designed by the evil mastermind Davros.
Dapol, a Llangollen business specialising in manufacturing train sets, for many years manufactured Dalek memorabilia. It was once home to a museum dedicated to the series but it has now been transported to Blackpool.
The creation of the Daleks is credited to the imaginations of series writer Terry Nation and designer Raymond Cusick.
Mr Nation, who was born in Cardiff, was inspired by memories of Wales during the Second World War and the fear of Nazis and bombing. Mr Cusick is understood to have used a pepper shaker for his initial sketches.
